Costa Rica

Although recognized for its leadership in conservation and renewable energy,  Costa Rica also faces pressure from stakeholders interested in exploring for gas and oil in the Caribbean Sea.

Costa Rican Caribbean

Costa Rica has a moratorium that prevents the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons, and there is no consumption of natural or fossil gas. Despite this, in recent years there have been several attempts to reactivate exploration under the false premises of “sustainable” exploration to determine the amount of resources and the need for fossil gas for energy transition. Costa Rica was a founding member of the Beyond Gas and Oil Alliance, but the country has now abandoned that leadership role.
