Oil exploration threatens the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System off the coast of Honduras, home to 90% of the total coral diversity in the entire Caribbean.

Honduran Moskitia

Honduras has maintained an offshore oil exploration and exploitation contract in force for the last 12 years, its first phase included seismic exploration in the Caribbean Sea, and recently authorization has been requested for the next phase of exploration involving well drilling. Although some consultations were carried out with certain communities, there have been gaps and weaknesses in transparency and participation of the indigenous and Afro-Honduran peoples directly impacted by the project.

In 2023, the Honduran Ministry of Energy and the state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a framework for cooperation on technical and legal knowledge, information, experiences, and best practices in the field of hydrocarbons.
