Oceana led the advocacy against offshore oil in Belize starting in April 2010. We’ve utilized various grassroots and strategic communication tactics over the years such as a national referendum, national petition drive, social media movements, litigation, and science to achieve and defend the moratorium on offshore oil.

Transparency in how environmental decisions are made is essential. That’s why we are working to raise awareness for the Escazu Agreement and pushing for the right to a healthy environment to be included in Belize’s Constitution, in addition to getting protection for the moratorium on offshore oil at the Constitutional Level. Oceana in Belize also works on promoting sustainable fishing practices and reducing plastic pollution.
