Panamanian Caribbean
There is currently no exploitation of fossil fuels in Panama, however, in 2017 studies were conducted to explore the country’s oil potential, and recently, in 2024, the country announced the start of exploration activities in the Caribbean. In addition, there is pollution in Panamanian waters due to the constant transit of ships in its territory, especially in the Panama Canal area. On the other hand, the Panamanian Caribbean has been polluted for more than 40 years by the trans-isthmus pipeline that transports crude oil to the Pacific coast. It is an oil pipeline consisting of two terminals and a pipeline that crosses the country and has caused major oil spills, mainly affecting the sea and the coastal communities that depend on it for their livelihood. Even with these experiences, Panama has established in its Energy Transition Agenda the intention to become a regional energy hub, promoting the use and expansion of the Liquefied Natural Gas market.
