PROBIOS
Since 2009, PROBIOS works on biodiversity protection and the fight against illegal gold mining, especially against the increased use of mercury, cyanide and arsenic that represents such a big threat to our health.
Sea Turtles have a special place in our programs as they are very funerable to activities along our coast from fisheries, oil pollution, climate change but also poaching of the nests. We coordinate beach clean ups, drawing attention, awareness, and involvement of the community in animal protection. ProBios is also developing a “Jaguar catch and release” program to prevent the killing of jaguars in conflict with farmers.
In 2022 ProBios accused the state oil company Staatsolie of dumping oil in the river at their oil refinery at “Tout Lui Faut”. Our investigation with satellite imaging showed us that the oil spill was not incidental but structural. Even though we had all the visual and technical proof, we were sued for slandering the oil company. Luckily we won the case with the help of local and international lawyers. This case has drawn international attention and was named a SLAPP suit to discourage environmentalists.
ProBios is also developing its own independent Research Laboratory, a project in need of funds, for the local communities to be able to test and identify poisonous chemicals in gold mining and oil pollution.
