The Bahamas

Offshore oil exploration puts at risk the great seagrass meadows of The Bahamas, a global hotspot for blue carbon storage.

Our Island, Our Future

In 2021, Bahamas Petroleum Company announced that after 48 days of drilling offshore, they did not find commercially viable quantities of oil. Yet, they have not given up and are exploring ways to monetize and renew the rest of their leases in the Bahamas.

The Our Island, Our Future coalition revealed that 86% of Bahamian respondents support legislative action to prevent further fossil fuel exploration, with 74% advocating for a transition to renewable energy. In 2024 the country  joined the global call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, reinforcing its commitment to a just energy transition.
