Venezuela

A country that is economically dependent on a declining oil industry, where society continues to bet on revitalizing oil exploitation on the continent and offshore gas.

Fossil Expansion

Amidst contradictions between rhetoric and effective policies, despite the economic crisis, oil has experienced a slight recovery, and companies like Chevron continue to extract oil despite sanctions or prohibitions imposed by the U.S. government, which issues licenses and exceptions to oil companies. The production of charcoal for export continues to consolidate as an “alternative” and is sold by official and business media as “sustainable charcoal” or “green energy.” Efforts are made to discursively minimize the impact of logging, especially in the semi-arid northwest where forests in western parks are exploited. There is a campaign against environmental NGOs, with new legal frameworks to restrict research, activism, and dissemination activities.
